The origins of human occupation in the territory of the municipality of Ferreira do Alentejo date back to the end of the Neolithic, as evidenced by the archaeological remains abundantly found along the banks of the Vale d´ouro river and in the town of Porto Torrão.
The municipality was Donated in 1233 to the Order of Santiago da Espada, which built, in the highest and most strategic area of Ferreira, an imposing castle. However, in 1838, by deliberation of the Parish Council, the castle, already ruined, was demolished and, in its place, the public cemetery was built. the autonomous administrative district by the Floral of Leitura Nova, granted in Lisbon on March 5,1516 by D. Manuel I.
The town's toponym is closely linked to a popular tradition, the legend of the city of Singa, which states that around In the 5th century, a brave woman, the wife of a blacksmith, defended the town from barbarian invaders.
