History:
Alfundan may be one of the oldest villages in Alentejo, and may have achieved high importance during Roman times. Indeed, the name is of Latin origin, being a reference to the important Fundian family, which was adapted to Alfundan in the Islamic period. Another important Roman trace consists of two inscriptions dedicated to the Goddess Fortuna. During the visigotic period, a church in Alfundão, which was in the approximate place of the Mother Church, was built. About the thirteenth century, Alfundan was a landlord with autonomous jurisdiction, and in 1372 King D. Fernando handed over to Diogo. Afonso de Carvalhal, having been a village during this period. Father Jorge Cardoso said that "it states that tradition is this land created with the title of village: today is a poor village."
